While other brands have finally got their act together, for a long time Sony was the only game in town if you wanted a genuine 4K home cinema projector. The VW550ES is its latest 4K model, and its £9,000 price tag immediately reminds us that native 4K projection doesn’t yet come cheap. In fact, the projector hits the market with a ticket higher than its well-received VW520ES predecessor.

Somehow, Epson’s new EH-TW7300 only costs £2,200. That's despite it being one of only a handful of projectors capable of playing both 4K and high dynamic range sources. Surely such a ground-breaking deal has to be too good to be true?

Philips' original Screeneo, which debuted back in 2014, was perhaps the first home entertainment projector to liberate the ultra short-throw ethos from the boardroom/classroom and re-imagine it for regular living spaces. Now with this second iteration, Philips has refined the concept further.

It's perhaps surprising that the concept of ultra short throw projectors for the home hasn't taken off more readily. Unlike traditional home cinema beamers, which cast images across 3m to 5m, UST models like this £1,000 Optoma GT5000 throw up a 100in image from just 30cm.

Sony's VPL-HW45ES projector arrives on the back of plenty of anticipation. Its predecessor, the VPL-HW40ES, was a leading light in the sub-£2,000 price bracket, and since that model was launched Sony’s projector division has gone from strength to strength with its native 4K/high dynamic range-capable VW320ES and VW520ES home cinema beasts.

The latest in ViewSonic's LightStream range, the Pro7827HD certainly packs in the features. This modestly priced DLP single-chipper is evidently aimed at the home cinema crowd, with its native 3D support, REC.709 picture preset, ISF modes and eye-catching claimed contrast ratio of 22,000:1.

We had to wait two years until JVC refreshed its projector line – and two years is an eternity in the current AV world. At least with its 2016 X-range, it looks like JVC’s engineers used the time wisely, adding up-to-the-minute connectivity and HDR support to JVC’s proprietary and consistently excellent D-ILA projection engine.

While a growing number of today’s so-called home entertainment projectors are actually presentation PJs masquerading as movie machines, the BenQ W2000 is the real home cinema McCoy – despite its attractive £800 ticket.

JVC's corporate assimilation into Kenwood may have put product development on hold for a year or two, but now the brand is back with the DLA-X5000, yet another upgrade to what is proving to be a surprisingly intransigent projector design.

Every now and then a product lands that changes the game. One that delivers class-leading picture quality while bringing something new to the home cinema technology party. Sony's new VPL-VW520ES projector is such a product. And trust me, it's quite hard trying to write a review with your jaw hanging permanently open. It's messy.

Thanks to the Epson EH-LS10000, I can see clearly now the grain is gone. I can literally see all obstacles in my way. Gone are the dark clouds... replaced by perfect shadow detail and absolute blacks. This is laser home cinema, and it’s nothing less than a revolution in bigscreen viewing.

Until quite recently, you could expect to fork out over a grand for a brand-name Full HD projector with 3D capabilities. Now, though, such spec is a much more affordable proposition – Optoma's HD151X retails for just £650.

Not unlike Tony Curtis in The Boston Strangler, Sony continues to tighten its grip on the premium end of the home cinema projection market. Suave, good-looking and surprisingly cheap (in an admittedly expensive way), the VPL-VW300ES is the brand's fourth 4K/Ultra HD SXRD, and arguably it’s most compelling.

Epson makes much of the colour output of its 3LCD projection fleet, and often with good reason – most cast images which glow with Candy Crush vibrancy. The EH-TW6600W is a good example. This latest addition to its home theatre range creates images that compete with LED TVs in terms of kaleidoscopic vibrancy. With this PJ, superheroes appear more heroic and animations more animated. Sackcloth calibration miseries may not approve, but within minutes of installing the projector I was buzzing.

Despite costing just £500, Acer’s H6510BD is surprisingly pretty with its angular, minimalist lines and gloss-white finish. Its connections match those of many more expensive PJs too, with HDMI, D-Sub PC, VGA and USB offered.
