There are reasons to buy active bookshelf speakers over an iPod/Bluetooth dock. What you lose in portability and convenience is immediately gained in true performance. The A2s from Paradigm Shift are a case in point – their cabinet size affords space for both a 5.5in woofer and 1in tweeter, and you can position them to get a real stereo spread.

Originally banned outright by UK censors, this first screen adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau has stood the test of time extremely well. Unlike other horrors from the same era, the film still maintains an unshakable aura of terror and taboo-busting.

With a sequel hitting cinemas this Summer, it’s no surprise to find The Expendables being revisited here as an all-new 113-minute ‘Extended Director’s Cut’. As with Rambo, this isn’t only about adding new footage – Stallone has effectively re-edited the film from the ground up, utilising alternate takes and restructuring entire scenes. For a very detailed account of all of the changes, we highly recommend looking here and here.

As you’d expect – given that we’re called Home Cinema Choice – we just love really big flatscreens. We’d think nothing of knocking through a living room wall and obliterating our kids’ playroom to accommodate a monster display. Especially if that display didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Bose has to be different. You can’t call the Cinemate 1SR a soundbar, it’s a sound array. Likewise, the sub is not a sub, it’s an Acoustimass module. Bose is also coy about giving out technical specifications, so I know not what the power output is of either component. What I do know is that the ‘array’ has five drivers and connects by cable, or wirelessly, to the Acoustimass module.

A couple of months ago I wrote a piece for HCC about how much I loved my AV receiver. But I’ve now realised there’s something I love even more – my Sony PlayStation 3.

MartinLogan is famous for creating speakers that blend electrostatic panels with traditional bass drivers, an approach it’s been perfecting since the 1980s. With most brands opting for conventional cone-based designs, it’s ploughing a lone furrow with this tech, but reckons the results are better than anything else available.

It’s now 50 years since screen icon and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe passed away, but during that time her star power has not diminished one iota. Strange, then that until now none of her films have been released on Blu-ray in the UK. This four-disc set brings together four of her best (and best-loved) titles – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot. So let’s get stuck in…

It’s been over a decade since Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, Gonzo the Great and the rest of Jim Henson’s madcap puppets last appeared on the silver screen in the disappointing Muppets from Space. With their career in the doldrums, it looked like the franchise was done for and could only be saved by something truly amazing. Enter The Muppets, a heartfelt and extremely funny attempt to reintroduce the gang to kids of all ages. And you know what? It works. Welcome back!

The DMP-BDT500 is a Blu-ray player designed for music lovers. While it doesn’t skimp on visual refinements and connected cleverness, it really sets itself apart from the rest through sonic engineering. In many ways, this is Panasonic laying claim to the more esoteric end of the Blu-ray market, typically the stomping ground of brands like Cambridge Audio, Denon and Marantz.
