Ever since Kang Je-gyu's action blockbuster Shiri exploded onto the bigscreen in 1999, discerning film fans have kept an eye on South Korean cinema. Over the best part of two decades, this awareness has been rewarded by such diverse treats as Joint Security Area, My Wife is a Gangster, The Host and Park Chan-wook's astonishing Vengeance Trilogy.

When controversial but brilliant Artificial Intelligence creator Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is assassinated by anti-technology extremists, his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) manages to meld his consciousness with an A.I., keeping him alive in a computer mainframe. Or did she? Is the machine consciousness really Will? And if not, what hope does anybody have of shutting down the increasingly powerful virtual being?

In the five years following the 'Battle of Chicago', humanity has grown fearful of the Transformers, causing the US military to sever all ties with the Autobots. Meanwhile, an elite CIA black ops unit tasked with hunting down and destroying all surviving Decepticons has secretly been targeting Autobots as well, and supplying captured tech to robotics corporation KSI, which is attempting to build its own controllable Transformers.

After the unspeakable cinematic horror of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, it’s a tiny miracle that Michael Bay could persuade anybody that the world needed another instalment in this toy-based franchise. But persuade them he did, and the resulting 3D sci-fi epic went on to rake in more than $1billion at box offices around the world. But is the film actually any good?

Equal parts The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, this darkly humous Norwegian flick follows three college students making a documentary about bear attacks. The wannabe-filmmakers’ focus soon shifts to an alleged poacher whose refusal to let them interview him only makes them more determined. What they don’t realise though is that the mystery man actually works for a top-secret branch of the government, hunting and killing dangerous trolls that escape from their terretories.

Tron and Tron Legacy are films that enthuse and infuriate in equal amount. Both the ‘Original Classic’ (which may be pushing it a bit) and its belated sequel are films that don’t bear thinking about too hard lest the plots fall apart like a spectacularly flimsy house of cards. Instead, both favour style over substance… and what incredible style it is. Set inside a virtual world, these films look like nothing else you’ve ever seen: a world where the style convinces you that yes, of course, things would look like this inside a computer. And that’s how it works, until one of the cast opens their mouths and delivers yet more dreadful dialogue that rips you straight out of the world it creates. But then another great action scene occurs to wash it all away.

An old face returns to torment our undead heroes, and an even older face tempts them down a path nobody could have predicted, in this latest season of HBO's gory, sexy and curiously camp supernatural series. The end result isn't the best the show has ever been, but it shows clear signs of improvement from the previous season.

This supernatural series has never been afraid to court controversy with its graphic sex and violence. But that’s nothing compared to the fuss generated by the fairy-filled opening to this fourth season. This 'Marmite moment' caused some fans to claim True Blood had finally jumped the shark, but for my money it’s only a minor blip in an otherwise enjoyable saga about rogue witches and amnesiac vampires.

Back in 1995 Louisiana detectives Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) solved the ritualistic murder of a former prostitute that was connected to a series of other missing person reports. Flash-forward to 2012 and it looks like the murders have started up again. So what exactly happened all those years ago and why did the now-retired cops' friendship come to such a bitter end?

True Grit represents another notch on the belt for filmmaking brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, marking a return to the pinnacle of contemporary American filmmakers after the rather sleight Burn After Reading and A Serious Man.

Based on the first of Stephenie Meyer's popular series of novels, Twilight was the surprise success story at the box office late last year. Produced for less than $40million, the film took more than four times that at US cinemas alone. Having never heard of the franchise before, I was even more surprised to discover that this wasn't just a US phenomenon, but that the books shared a similarly rabid fanbase here in the UK. So, when the Blu-ray review copy of Twilight arrived in the HCC office, I was intrigued enough to volunteer to review it. Frankly, I wish I hadn't bothered...

'I'll see you again in 25 years,' said Laura Palmer to FBI Agent Dale Cooper in 1991 during what appeared to be the final ever episode of Twin Peaks. But she clearly knew what she was talking about, as here we are some 26 years later (okay, Laura was one year out) and co-writers David Lynch and Mark Frost have returned with 18 new episodes of the show.

Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, Twin Peaks single-handedly redefined TV drama. This riveting and unusual tale of the investigation into the murder of a small-town homecoming queen not only showed that viewers enjoyed being challenged and provoked by TV shows, but also introduced a level of cinematic quality to serialised drama that we've become so used to today.

There's no denying that Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 role-playing game has plenty of scope for spin-off movies. This makes it all the more surprising and disappointing that this CG animation is the first attempt at bringing the game's rich universe to the screen. Sure, Ultramarines may get the small details right, but the characters are mere cyphers, the pacing is dreadful and the plot is as predictable as they come. The Blu-ray's AVC 1.78:1 visuals look oddly washed-out and lack texture, while the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix goes for volume rather than quality. A missed opportunity.
