Philips OLED+908 flagship TV to launch in the UK in October
Said by the Dutch TV giant to ‘set a new performance reference point at the very top of the TV market,’ the OLED+908 is the brand’s first model to utilise a Micro Lens Array OLED panel, combined here with a ‘brightness boosting processing algorithm’.
The resulting ‘META OLED’ tech delivers a claimed peak brightness of 2,100 nits, a significant step up from its mid-tier OLED808 set. Viewing angle and energy efficiency are also said to benefit.
Image processing on the OLED+908 TVs is delivered by Philips’ 7th Gen P5 AI silicon, which introduces improvements to Ambient Intelligence (picture optimisation based on ambient lighting conditions), Super Resolution and Smart Bit Enhancement.
The TV continues the manufacturer’s collaboration with sound specialist Bowers & Wilkins, and integrates a 3.1-channel speaker system. Individual LCR arrays (each featuring 2x mid-range units and a titanium dome tweeter) are joined by a rear-firing woofer and passive radiators. An external subwoofer can be used for even more low-end welly.
The are no native Dolby Atmos drive units, but the TV’s decoding supports virtual Atmos playback.
Other key specs of the OLED+908 include 4K/120Hz playback and VRR, Dolby Vision gaming, and Philips’ customary Ambilight smart illumination tech. A new remote handset, which charges via USB-C, offers motion-sensitive backlighting so you can easily use it in your blacked-out movie room.
As with the OLED808, the smart system is Google TV, which currently doesn’t support Freeview Play. However, Philips says that ‘previous experience with Android TV suggests that Freeview Play will debut on the Google TV OS sooner rather than later.’
