The Abyss to surface on Blu-ray at long last?

It's looking increasingly likely that James Cameron's The Abyss will finally be coming to Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Yes, we know that we've been through this several times before, only for Cameron's other commitments to get in the way of him signing off on the new master, but there are a couple of things that lend the rumours a little more weight this time around.

First up is the fact that 2019 marks the 30th Anniversary of The Abyss and the long-awaited Blu-ray release would be the perfect way of celebrating this fact.

Second, and more important, is the following post which appeared on Skip Kimball Instagram account over the weekend. Kimball is a senior film colourist at EFilm's digital laboratories (where he worked on the likes of Deadpool 2 and Alita: Battle Angel), and his post appears to show that the new 4K scan of The Abyss's negative that Cameron discussed back has been undergoing a new colour grade...

So it appears that work on The Abyss is finally starting to ramp up. Let's just hope that they can pry Cameron away from those Avatar sequels long enough to give the new colour grade a look and sign off on it.

Of course, 2019 also marks the 25th anniversary of True Lies. Could a Blu-ray/4K release of that film be on the cards, too? We'll be keeping our fingers-crossed.
