Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's stories of the same name, The Jungle Book is notable for being the last Disney film that Walt really had a hand in prior to his death, and for the place it maintains in the hearts of the legions of the animation studio's fans.

While his earlier Fear & Desire and Killer's Kiss both contain flashes of brilliance, it was Stanley Kubrick's third feature that saw him mature as a filmmaker. A tense thriller, The Killing tells the story of a group of thieves who come together with the perfect plan to rob millions from a race track, only for human foibles to bring things crashing down around them.

Michael Mann's lavish screen adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's novel makes a belated bow on UK Blu-ray. The AVC 2.40:1 1080p visuals are extremely dark and grainy, which often robs the picture of detail and gives it a softer appearance, but this appears to be true to the source material. The visuals are backed-up by a powerful (if front-heavy) DTS-HD MA 5.1 track that comes alive during battle scenes. In addition to the so-called 'Definitive Cut' of the film, the BD also includes a chat-track and a three-part Making of… documentary.

Having wrapped up an eight-year term as Governor of California, it was no surprise to learn that Arnold Schwarzenegger was planning a return to the silver screen. But at 65-years of age, many wondered if the former superstar would still have what it takes to kick-ass with the best of them.

I suppose it was inevitable that the public’s thirst for comic superheroes would lead to filmmakers once again raiding the world of myths and legends to find new muscle-bound protagonists.

While foiling yet another of the villain's schemes to destroy Gotham City, Batman (Will Arnett) adds insult to injury by telling the Joker (Zach Galifianakis) that he isn't his greatest foe; the Caped Crusader prefers to promiscuously 'fight around'. Outraged by Batman's unwillingness to acknowledge the huge role he plays in his life, Joker plots his revenge.

By all rights The LEGO Movie should be terrible. If Michael Bay can only manage to make one watchable flick based on a toy range featuring giant transforming robots, what hope did anybody have in making a film based on a famous range of interlocking plastic bricks?

Radley Metzger is one of the more intriguing US directors to have ever worked in the world of softcore erotica. Like much of his work, this 1970 feature mixes art-house sensibilities with softcore nooky, the end effect in this case being akin to a smutty version of Alain Resnais' French New Wave darling Last Year at Marienbad. And it's doubtful that the film has looked this good in a very long time thanks to Arrow's pleasing AVC 1.85:1 1080p transfer (a full restoration is needed, but would undoubtedly be far too expensive for a movie such as this).

One of the extras on this Blu-ray release finds Martin Scorsese waxing lyrical about the film's digital restoration and thanking those involved (both technically and financially). The plaudits are entirely deserved. Powell and Pressburger's classic military satire looks sensational on this new Blu-ray platter, with the AVC 1.37:1 1080p encode breathing new life into the Technicolor imagery. This limited edition steelbook also includes a 24-minute featurette, photo gallery and bonus DVD copy.

Was there ever another Disney classic that’s had as much success as The Lion King? A box office sensation on its original cinema release in 1994, the film went on to set new sales records on VHS and DVD, before ushering in an award-winning Broadway musical adaptation and two further direct-to-DVD sequels. And all that before it smashed box office records again earlier this year during its limited 3D re-release in cinemas.

It's impossible to overstate just how important 1989's The Little Mermaid was to Disney. More than just a return to the world of fairy tale adaptations after a gap of 30 years, the film also transformed the studio's fortunes, bringing to an end its decade-long run of critical and commercial disappointments. And even if the film's gender politics can be (and have been) debated endlessly, at the end of the day this animated screen version of Hans Christian Anderson's aquatic adventure is a resounding success. Packed to the gills with memorable characters and catchy songs, it's Disney's best animated feature since 1967's The Jungle Book.

When his brother is killed by a gang of outlaws, mild-mannered lawyer John Reid (Arnie Hammer) is rescued by a Native American called Tonto (Johnny Depp) and is reborn as a masked avenger. So far, so ordinary – but as you might expect from the producer, director and star of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, this isn't the same Lone Ranger that your parents grew up with.

The Long Good Friday stars Bob Hoskins as Harold Shand, an old-fashioned East End gangster who aspires to become a legitimate businessman. With the financial support of the American Mafia he dreams of renovating London's derelict Docklands, but not even Shand can keep things on track when his business is targeted by the IRA.

Raymond Chandler's most famous literary creation – private investigator Philip Marlowe – is reborn as a moral man adrift in a self-obsessed world he doesn't fit into ('70s Los Angeles) in Robert Altman's revisionist take on the genre. It's a wonderful film – one of the director's best – and this BD certainly does it proud. Arrow's AVC 2.35:1 1080p encode excels at replicating the film's desaturated visuals, while the LPCM mono track is as good as you could hope for. The disc also packs in plenty of great extras, including an isolated score, interviews and a 1996 TV documentary about Altman's career.

Walter Hill's superb retelling of the Jesse James story receives a long-overdue UK Blu-ray release courtesy of Second Sight. The good news is that it's a damn sight more impressive HD package than MGM's lacklustre 2011 US release. The AVC-encoded 1.85:1 1080p picture is fairly inconsistent, but it's clear that Second Sight put effort into cleaning up MGM's old HD master. Elsewhere the LPCM 2.0 mix works wonders with Ry Cooder's score. Newly-created extras include an hour-long documentary, an 'anatomy of a scene' featurette and Hill talking about Sam Peckinpah.
