hccbestbuybadgev3JVC has gone native (4K) with its 'mainstream' D-ILA projectors. John Archer dims the lights and drools

JVC's D-ILA home cinema projectors have almost always been brilliant. What they haven't typically been up to recently, though, is natively 4K – and its first native 4K home cinema model was the £35,000 Z1 laser PJ, which I'm almost certain you didn't buy. More affordable models long relied on proprietary e-Shift technology to deliver a pseudo 4K effect by passing HD images through two fractionally offset 1080p imaging chips.

It wasn't a huge surprise when JVC announced its new NZ series of laser-powered projectors last autumn, but what did surprise was the full extent of the upgrade. These new beamers include all the features found on the previous generation, but add HDMI 2.1 inputs capable of handling 8K/60p and 4K/120p, an upgraded iteration of its 8K e-Shift technology (dubbed e-ShiftX), and support for HDR10+.

It says much that JVC’s entry-level projector comes in where other brands' high-end offerings sign off. Priced at £2,900, it looks a veritable bargain when viewed alongside the company's £10,000 bespoke DLA-X95R flagship.

JVC's corporate assimilation into Kenwood may have put product development on hold for a year or two, but now the brand is back with the DLA-X5000, yet another upgrade to what is proving to be a surprisingly intransigent projector design.

The 4K world is confusing for punters. Is it 4K or UHD? Do you need an HDMI 2.0 socket for proper 4K playback? Is ‘true’ 4K 4,096 x 2,160 or 3,840 x 2,160? What compression/coding format will eventual 4K discs use? And so it goes. Frankly, the last thing the burgeoning 4K world needs is a projector that can take in 4K content, uses a technology called e-shift 4K but isn’t actually a 4K projector. Except that in some ways it sort of is.

The arrival of any new projector using JVC’s consistently outstanding D-ILA technology sets HCC's pulse racing. But it’s fair to say we’re even more flustered than usual at the delivery of JVC’s new DLA-X55 model.

It used to be fairly easy to predict what each new generation of JVC projector would give you. A bit more brightness, even more contrast, and maybe a new calibration tool or two. It’s starting to look, though, as if JVC has gone as far as it can in contrast and brightness terms with its proprietary D-ILA projection tech. The new DLA-X5900 reviewed here claims the same 1,800 Lumens brightness and 400,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio figures delivered by its predecessor, the X5500.

If you still aren't convinced about 3D, John Archer has no doubt at all that JVC’s latest projector will change your mind

Not everyone ‘gets’ 3D. Indeed, there are days when I’m not sure I totally need it myself. But not so today.

With 3D’s appeal apparently fizzing out for some, our geekometers are pointing towards 4K resolutions as being one of the next big things in AV.

We had to wait two years until JVC refreshed its projector line – and two years is an eternity in the current AV world. At least with its 2016 X-range, it looks like JVC’s engineers used the time wisely, adding up-to-the-minute connectivity and HDR support to JVC’s proprietary and consistently excellent D-ILA projection engine.

While we rapturously praised JVC’s decision to turn its traditional D-ILA projection trio into a quartet this year when reviewing the outstanding DLA-X55 addition to the range, it occurred to us that that model's excellence potentially caused the brand a problem. In previous years the step up from JVC’s entry-level projectors to the mid-range equivalents of this year’s DLA-X75 was clearly defined. Now, though, you may wonder if the DLA-X75 can up the ante enough from the DLA-X55 to justify its extra £1,500 or so cost.

hcc_recommendedLG's new UST laser projector is smart, compact and bright. Steve May, who is none of those things, takes a closer look

If you invite the neighbours to watch Turning Red on your new LG 'CineBeam' HU715Q projector, will they leave an envious shade of green? I reckon so. The Korean company's take on the (slowly) evolving 'laser TV' market is delightfully impressive.

It's perhaps surprising that the concept of ultra short throw projectors for the home hasn't taken off more readily. Unlike traditional home cinema beamers, which cast images across 3m to 5m, UST models like this £1,000 Optoma GT5000 throw up a 100in image from just 30cm.

Until quite recently, you could expect to fork out over a grand for a brand-name Full HD projector with 3D capabilities. Now, though, such spec is a much more affordable proposition – Optoma's HD151X retails for just £650.
