UK's second Dolby Cinema opens today at ODEON Luxe Leeds Thorpe Park

The UK's second Dolby Cinema has opened today at ODEON Luxe Leeds Thorpe Park. The cinema, which features 263 recliner seats, combines Dolby Vision projection on a 19-metre-wide screen with what Dolby describes as 'studio-grade' Dolby Atmos.

The Dolby Cinema screen (screen 2) is joined at the new multiplex by a 173-seat ODEON iSense theatre, which also offers 4K projection and Atmos sonics, plus eight further screens, all with reclining chairs.

As one of ODEON's new Luxe offerings, Leeds Thorpe Park integrates an Oscar's Bar, selling pre-movie drinks/coffee/popcorn/posh chips.

HCC attending the gala opening event last night, where a screening of DC flick Shazam! followed a technical presentation from Julian Stamford, senior director of Dolby Cinema Europe.

Stamford emphasised his belief that the Dolby Cinema AV experience in the Leeds operation out-performs that of the London Leicester Square flagship. 'Don't tell anyone...' he quipped.

Our verdict is that it certainly lives up to the hype. The twin 4K projector visuals showcase a staggering dynamic range, and the Atmos presentation of Shazam! was astonishing. Bass depth and slam was... superheroic.

Regards pricing, tickets across the Dolby Cinema are the same – there's no tiered plan as there is at ODEON Luxe Leicester Square. A ticket for Avengers: Endgame in Dolby 3D later this April is £15.25 – a price premium over a typical multiplex screen but no doubt worth it.

And if you're looking for the best seat in the house, aim for dead centre of Row G...

I saw Shazam in Dolby 3D last week at this cinema and it blew my mind...luckily it’s a 10 minute bus trip from the bottom of my street so I’m going to be buying my limitless card next week.
