Philips launches 2020 OLED sets, adds B&W sonics to 4K LED range

Philips has taken the wraps off its TV lineup for the first half of 2020, announcing two new OLED models, plus LED sets with integrated Bowers & Wilkins sound systems.

Available later this year, Philips' OLED805 and OLED855 TVs will pack a fourth-generation variant of its P5 image processor, and support HDR10+ and Dolby Vision for a universal HDR solution, plus Dolby Atmos.

The TVs, which will feature three-sided Ambilight smart illumination and sell in 55in and 65in screen sizes, will continue Philips' use of the Android smart platform (v9) and offer an app for the new Disney+ streaming platform.

Philips says its P5 processing engine builds upon the previous 3rd Gen iteration with the addition of AI functionality. Based on neural networks and machine learning, this is able to 'analyse millions of PQ test clips from a unique database created in-house by the Philips TV development team over the past 30 years.'

'By analysing all elements of the content, frame by frame, the 4th Gen P5 reproduces a much more realistic, natural image that no longer feels like TV but creates images that closely mirror real life.'

The AI processor works to offer 'a better overall HDR performance' from HDR10 and HDR10+ content, says Philips, and 'improves Dolby Vision encoded dynamic HDR content' using the Dolby Bright mode.

Design wise, the OLED805 (pictured above) and OLED855 feature the thin chassis and ultra-slim bezels that are de rigueur in the OLED market. Chamfered dark feet are deployed on the OLED805, while the OLED855 is supported by a T-bar stand.

Both TVs will ship with a new premium remote with backlit keys and side/rear leather wrap.

Away from OLED, Philips has extended its partnership with audio specialist Bowers & Wilkins to bring integrated soundbar systems to its new 9435 and 9235 4K LED models. The former, in 55in and 65in screen sizes, incorporates a 2.1.2 speaker array using upfiring drivers for Dolby Atmos playback and is rated at 50W. The latter is a 43in (only) model (pictured below) with 2.1 sound system. Both feature Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support.

Prices for Philips' new screens are still TBC.
