Monitor Audio Concept 50 loudspeaker, weighing 96kg, arriving late 2022

Monitor Audio has announced a new flagship model that it says will enter production later this year. Currently named 'Concept 50', it made its debut as a prototype at the recent Munich High End show.

Pricing isn't finalised, and there's also the possibility the company may arrive at a different product name, but plenty of specification details have been revealed.

A towering 1.3m-high, 96kg three-way, the speaker features an unusual chassis configuration with two full-size cabinets positioned either side of a central mid/treble array. Called, somewhat unimaginatively, ‘The Array’, this mounts six 50mm mid-range drivers around what the brand says is the ‘definitive’ version of its Micro Pleated Diaphragm (MPD) tweeter (previously featured in its Gold and Platinum ranges), for 'single point source' dispersion.

Bass drivers, which contribute to a claimed low-end reach of 21Hz, are housed within the two side cabinets and are not visible until you peer inside the gap between. The Concept 50 uses four 200mm woofers, arranged in anchored, inward-firing 'force-cancelling' pairs. The speaker's main enclosures are down-ported and made from thermoformed mineral/acrylic stone.

A 3D-printed 'acoustic resin', on a solid aluminium baffle, is used for the 'Array'.

Monitor Audio says development of the Concept 50 began two years as 'an experiment', and it has been designed 'to deliver unrivalled sound like no other loudspeaker on the market.' No doubt it will cost more than many others too.

The announcement follows hot on the heels of Monitor Audio's launch of a new modular, custom-install focused loudspeaker range called Cinergy.
