LG adds AirPlay 2 and Homekit to 2019 AI TV range

LG has begun rolling out a firmware update that introduces Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit functionality to its 2019 OLED, Nano Cell and UHD TVs with ThinQ AI capability.

The introduction of AirPlay 2 will allow owners of compatible TVs to stream movies/shows from iPhone, iPad and Mac devices, including Dolby Vision HDR content. An LG TV will also become another audio zone in an AirPlay multiroom system, with playback of content from Apple Podcasts, Apple Music, streaming services and the user's music library.

LG says it is the first 'global TV manufacturer' to usher in HomeKit support. This feature will integrate its smart TVs within Apple's smarthome ecosystem. Control of the TV will be offered within the Home App, and users will be able to add LG's AI TVs to HomeKit scenes/automations.

'LG remains at the forefront of TV technological innovation because of our never-ending quest to deliver the best home viewing experience,' said Brian Kwon, president of LG's Mobile Communications and Home Entertainment divisions.

The firmware update for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit began rolling out to compatible LG TVs last week, with the company saying it will continue 'over the coming weeks'.
