Avatar 3D Blu-ray release date confirmed

Fans can soon add a third Blu-ray incarnation of Cameron's blockbuster to their collection

It's the most wanted 3D Blu-ray release of all time, but until now the only way to get hold of a stereoscopic version of James Cameron's award-winning sci-fi spectacular Avatar was as part of a promotional deal with selected Panasonic Blu-ray players, recorders and cinema systems. Either that, or pay over-the-odds on ebay or similar auction sites for a second-hand copy.

However, that's all about to change following the news that Avatar will be available to buy on 3D Blu-ray in the UK from October 15. The announcement came via Facebook initially, with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment claiming that doing this enabled it to instantly reach some 33million Avatar fans.

'3D television is the future of home entertainment,' said director James Cameron. 'I'm a huge proponent of the technology and very pleased that Avatar can be viewed in the living room the way it was meant to be seen'.

'As the number of home with 3D televisions continues to grow, we thought it was important to bring the biggest 3D film ever right into your living room' stated producer Jon Landau. 'This is the only way fans should experience the world of Pandora and this release offers the highest picture quality possible'.

Exact disc specifications are a little thin on the ground, but Fox claims that the Avatar 3D Limited Edition will be a two-disc set (one Blu-ray and one DVD copy of the film, if the sleeve is to be believed) with the 'all-new collectible packaging' shown above.
