Ultra HD Blu-ray specification complete

Blu-ray Disc Association celebrates with a brand-new logo for kit and software

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced the completion of the Ultra HD Blu-ray specification and released the new logo (seen above) that will appear on all Ultra HD Blu-ray products.

The BDA claims that the final Ultra HD Blu-ray specification address a range of factors, beyond simply increasing image resolution, that will 'significantly enhance the home entertainment experience for consumers'. So, in addition to delvering content with an image resolution up to 3840 x 2160, the Ultra HD Blu-ray format also enables delivery of an expanded colour range, High Dynamic Range (HDR) and high frame rate content. Next-gen object-based audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X will also be delivered by the format. An optional digital bridge feature promises to 'enhance the value of content' by embracing the notion that a content purchase can enable the consumers to view their content across the range of in-home and mobile devices.

The specification also mandates that all Ultra HD Blu-ray players will have to be capable of playing back current Blu-ray discs.

'For years, Blu-ray Disc has set the standard for high definition picture and audio quality in the home. Ultra HD Blu-ray will do the same for UHD home entertainment', says Victor Matsuda, chair, BDA Promotions Commitee. 'The technical capabilities of Blu-ray Disc, in particular its significant storage capacity and high data transfer rates, will enable the delivery of an unparalleled, consisten and repeatable UHD experience'.

Licensing of Ultra HD Blu-ray is scheduled to begin this Summer.
