When it was announced that the BBC had regained the screening rights for F1 starting with the 2009 season, hopes were high that this would mean the sport would finally be broadcast in hi-def in the UK. Sadly, we can now confirm that this definitely won't be the case this year.
Responding to questions posted in the comments section of an article on the BBC Sport Editors' Blog, Roger Mosey, Director of BBC Sport stated that 'F1 won't yet be available in HD though we'd very much like it to be'. Fingers crossed for the 2010 season then.
On a more positive note, Mosey did reveal that the broadcaster's current plan is for Races and Qualifying to air uninterrupted on TV (with races appearing on iPlayer later in the week), with additional content such as practice sessions being made available both online and via the Red Button.
The new F1 season kicks off with the Melbourne Grand Prix on March 29.

JimmyR (not verified) - 7 January 2009 - 10:27pmBlimey, I'm glad not everyone is a killjoy like you, hd f1! Let's have everything in HD as soon as possible, then let's look forward to 3D-HD and then Super High Definition and 3D Super High Definition. Let's also have everything in Dolby Digital 5.1 too. Onward and upward!
Everything will move to HD,
Paul S (not verified) - 9 January 2009 - 1:48pmEverything will move to HD, why would you want to keep certain things SD unless they were originally filmed on SD formats?
Anyways I'll look forward to HD coming to F1 the following year....I think it's to do with making sure the TV people in each country are able to do HD which is why it took and age to move it to widescreen. Could be wrong though :)
